James Ibori was jailed for fraud in the United Kingdom

Just hours after he returned to Nigeria, former Delta governor, James Ibori was having a chat with the Department of State Services (DSS).

This chat was not a friendly one, but rather an intense interrogation in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Saturday morning.

Ibori who arrived Nigeria on a chartered private plane was expected to fly him to Warri and was to land at Osubi airfield operated by Shell.

Ibori was jailed in April 2012 for fraud amounting to nearly 50 million pounds (at the time $78.5 million/62 million euros) following a drawn-out extradition procedure and his evasion of arrest and prosecution in Nigeria.

He had fled to Dubai in 2010, from where he was extradited to Britain.

Back in Nigeria friends, family and associates of Ibori, who were expecting him in the country next Wednesday, were said to have been astonished when they learnt that the ex-convict had arrived in the country unheralded.

They were said to have been planning to give him a hero’s welcome devoid of his status as an ex-convict.

Punch reports that the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Lawan Daura, instructed that Ibori be brought to his office at Aso Drive, Abuja, for questioning.

The former governor was said to have been interrogated on his sojourn in the United Kingdom where he was recently released from prison.
